For the last generation, we have pushed God out of American culture. Once common sites such as the Ten Commandments in courts and Nativity scenes are no longer seen and are in some cases illegal. Let’s face it, we live in a God-omitted culture today. It has even gone so far that there are advocates trying to rewrite history by saying we were never founded as a Christian nation at all. Yet despite these claims, it is interesting to note many common sayings that persist in society today have Biblical origins. For example:
- David vs. Goliath (1 Samuel 17): This is a metaphor mostly used in the sports world today, symbolizing the struggle between an underdog vs. a heavy favorite.
- Pride comes before a fall (Proverbs 16:18): This verse is about how too much confidence can lead to foolish mistakes.
- The writing is on the wall (Daniel 5:5-6): This is an Old Testament prophecy about impending peril being clearly shown.
- Put words in one’s mouth (2 Samuel 14:3): The false suggestion that someone said or meant something else.
- Go the extra mile (Matthew 5:41): This passage is about going above and beyond what is expected of someone.
- The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37): Many hospitals today still bear the name Good Samaritan after the parable Jesus told regarding helping our neighbor.
If we were never founded as a Christian nation, then why are these Bible sayings and many more so deeply embedded in our culture? Anyone who speaks these phrases confirms the spiritual truth that our foundations are rooted in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is proof that even in a God-omitted culture, God is still present. Ponder that this week.
